For the clearest route through the Gargoyles comic continuation, read Clan Building before Here in Manhattan. Add Bad Guys alongside the earlier comic era, then explore the other series according to the characters and periods that interest you.

This is a practical starting route, not a list of every special, crossover or later release. Its purpose is to help you choose your first book without turning reading into an inventory exercise.

The main path

  1. Clan Building: the twelve chapter story originally published by SLG, written by Greg Weisman.
  2. Bad Guys: a companion series from the SLG period. Read it after Clan Building if you want to keep your first journey simple.
  3. Here in Manhattan: the Dynamite continuation by Weisman and artist George Kambadais. Begin with its first volume.
  4. Quest: another chapter of the Dynamite saga, featuring Demona and the Manhattan Clan.

Where Dark Ages belongs

Dark Ages looks back to medieval Scotland. That makes it tempting to place it at the very beginning, but story chronology and a useful introduction are different things. Our recommendation is to meet the central cast first, then return to their earlier lives. The contrast becomes part of the pleasure.

What about the Marvel comics?

The original 1995 Marvel run is collected as Classic Years. Treat it as a separate reading project rather than a required bridge between the television series and Clan Building. Its eleven issues let you explore an earlier approach to the characters without interrupting your main route.

Check the contents, not just the cover

A new printing can put an old story in a new package. Before buying, check the subtitle, credited creators and collected issue numbers. A different cover does not necessarily mean a different story, and a volume number only makes sense within its own collection series.

If you already own part of a run, make a short list of the issue numbers you have. Compare that list with the contents of the edition you are considering. This small check is more useful than buying whichever book looks newest.
