If you want to continue from the first two seasons of Gargoyles, begin with Clan Building. If you want a more recent comic entry point, Here in Manhattan offers another way in, while drawing on a story that already has history behind it.
Choosing between them is less about finding the only correct book than deciding what kind of return you want.
Follow the continuation closely
In his explanation of continuity, Greg Weisman places the first sixty five television episodes before the SLG comics and then the Dynamite stories. That makes Clan Building the natural starting point for readers who want to follow that progression.
There is one television complication worth knowing before you begin. The comic continuation does not simply proceed through every event of The Goliath Chronicles. Its opening adapts The Journey, before developing the comic storyline. If you remember the entire televised third season, allow the books to establish their own sequence.
Start with a newer introduction
Weisman has also explained that Here in Manhattan was designed to introduce readers who had never watched the show. You can therefore start there without treating older material as an entrance exam.
The tradeoff is context. Reading the earlier continuation first gives you more of the journey behind the characters' circumstances. Starting later lets you find out whether you enjoy the comic format immediately. Choose the approach that keeps you reading.
Keep your first reading free of spoilers
Character encyclopedias are useful, but they can reveal later relationships and turning points in a single opening paragraph. If something seems unfamiliar, try the book's own introduction or recap before searching a character's complete biography.
You do not need to solve every reference as it appears. A story can introduce a person before explaining everything about them. Distinguish an intriguing question from a missing prerequisite.
Choose one book first
Find an edition with a clear contents listing and begin at its opening chapter. Do not buy an entire shelf because several series share the Gargoyles name. Once you know whether you most enjoy the Manhattan continuation, the medieval setting or the supporting cast, choosing the next book becomes easier.
For the closest continuation, choose Clan Building. For an accessible newer starting point, choose the first Here in Manhattan volume. Both decisions leave room to explore the wider comic history later.
